Windows Fresh Installation | All You Need to Know

Alright, many people find Windows installation complicated. In this post I'll share detailed specs for a Windows install. Maybe you got a new system or you want to get rid of manufacturer junk in your current Windows. Or you have set your mind for dual booting Linux with Windows and you want to make sure all requirements are fulfilled. Lets get right into it.

If you are unfamiliar with the terminology of operating systems you can check out the post dedicated for the same, Detailed Introduction to Operating Systems

Its fair breaking the installation procedure into these two parts:
  • Knowing your system (Somewhat hard unknown part)
  • Installing Windows (Somewhat easy known part)
Knowing about your system
Before installing Windows this is the first step which involves checking these in the current system you are using:

Architecture: 64 bit / 32 bit - This is the instruction set specific to CPU. You can open start menu and type "msinfo32" and look for System Type from system information.
  • 64 bit - You need 64 bit Windows 10 iso file.
  • 32 bit - You need 32 bit Windows 10 iso file.
BIOS Mode: UEFI / MBR - This is the firmware specific to motherboard. You can open start menu and type "msinfo32" and look for BIOS Mode from system information.
  • UEFI - You should format your hard disk as GPT partitioning scheme. When flashing iso file, you'll need to make sure target system is "UEFI (non CSM)".
  • MBR - When flashing iso file, you'll need to make sure target system is "BIOS (UEFI CSM)".
Storage Controller: RAID / AHCI / IDE - These are different interfaces that operate hard disks in a system. You can open start menu and type "Device Manager" and look for IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and expand to know your controller type.
  • RAID - If you are planning to use this system just to run Windows and not install Linux then you can continue using RAID. If you have plans to install Linux alongside Windows in future then I recommend switching to AHCI before installing Windows.
  • AHCI - This is currently the most compatible IDE controller right now. You won't come across any problem using it.
  • IDE - If you are using IDE you will lack full control on SATA line, try switching to AHCI if you can but its not a must.
Installing Windows
Once you know your system specifications, you are good to install Windows by searching for a specific guide for your system. Like, typical modern systems are 64 bit + UEFI + AHCI and require formatting hard drive as GPT and flashing the installation drive as "UEFI (non CSM)". One good tutorial worth mentioning is from Windows Central, How to install Windows 10 from USB with UEFI support
